A LIFE WITH HORSES  Spirit of the Work

In this beautiful full-color book, popular authors Mark Rashid and Kathleen Lindley team up to provide the reader with an intimate look into a world of horses and horsemanship clinics that few people get to see close up. Lindley's vibrant photographs, accompanied by descriptive text by both authors, chronicle the spirit of their life's work. In covering subjects such as a young wild Mustang's initial handling, softness, friendship, and hands that employ the tools of the trade, this book offers the reader an unflinching and compassionate pictorial account of a life with horses.

About the Authors
Mark Rashid is an internationally acclaimed horse trainer known for his ability to understand the horse's point of view, and to solve difficult problems with communication rather than force. Mark's clinics center on one-on-one work with horse and rider and are immensely popular with people around the world.

Kathleen Lindley got her first camera at age 14--about the same time she got her first horse. Upon graduation from high school, she professionally trained hunter/jumper show horses. Her photography has appeared in popular equine magazines in the UK and in several books. Kathleen became one of Mark's students in 1995 and they continued to work together until 2005, when she became his full-time assistant. Together, the pair has traveled over 100,000 miles in three different countries giving clinics and helping people with their horses. Today, Mark and Kathleen both have busy individual clinic schedules, and also enjoy working together whenever they can.

BIG HORSES, GOOD DOGS, & STRAIGHT FENCES

Marks latest book is a collection of fifteen tales, where he takes a nostalgic look at the time in his life when he was just a hardworking horseman on cattle ranches and guest ranches near his home in Estes Park, Colorado. The book includes some of Marks favorite stories of the people and animals he met and worked with in those days.

Mark's writing style makes you feel like you're sitting down with an old friend over a cup of coffee, reminiscing about the good old days. Whether Mark is helping a friend put up a rail fence where a cross-buck should go, trying to rescue a drowning colt, or simply watching his son grow up, he is sure to make you chuckle - and probably bring back a few similar memories of your own.

HORSEMANSHIP THROUGH LIFE

When Mark Rashid finds himself lying in the dirt during a horsemanship clinic he is conducting in England, he realizes that his fall, the first in many, many years, is much more than a simple fall from a horse. Mark sees this timely accident as a wake up call that slowly moves him to rediscover the meaning of his life’s work with people and the horses they love. Even as a highly successful author, teacher and clinician, Mark is forced to face the fact that he had become somewhat complacent in his work and that he had stopped growing as a horseman and as a person. Mark’s efforts to recover from years of physical injuries and to rekindle his passion for working with horses are at the heart of Horsemanship Through Life.

As Mark looks back on a series of seemingly unrelated events that ultimately led to the fall in England, he begins to realize that he needs to create room in his life for the personal and professional growth he is seeking. A chance encounter with a man at one of his clinics ultimately leads Mark to become a student of the Japanese martial art aikido, “The Way of Harmony.” That decision takes Mark back to his roots with the “old man” who taught him how to work with horses, and moves him forward to a new and clearer understanding of the concepts of blending and flowing with a horse’s energy, rather than fighting against it. The result of his efforts is a renewed commitment to compassionate communication with horses, using honor, integrity and dignity.

CONSIDERING THE HORSE - Tales of Problems Solved and Lessons Learned

A GOOD HORSE IS NEVER A BAD COLOR

In this follow-up to his first book, "Considering the Horse," Mark Rashid continues to share his gift for using communication, not force, in working with horses. Rashid uses heart-warming and humorous stories to share his techniques of teaching horses by understanding their view of the world. These tales deal with many facets of buying, owning, and training horses. Stories of Arabs, appaloosas, and paints—mistrusted and mistreated because of their breed—will give you a new perspective on these breeds and others. Rashid’s accounts of horses bound for slaughter because they couldn’t be trained will inspire you to give your own problem horse another look. And when Wil, the ugliest horse you can imagine, turns out to be the best on the ranch, you’ll understand why a good horse is never a bad color.

HORSES NEVER LIE

In "Horses Never Lie," acclaimed horse trainer Mark Rashid breaks new ground by challenging the longstanding belief that a person must become the "alpa leader" in order to work with horses. Instead, "Horses Never Lie" teaches you how to become a "passive leader"—a reflection of the kind of horse other members of a herd choose to be around and to follow. It’s a must read for all horse owners who care about their horses and the kind of relationship they have with them.

LIFE LESSONS FROM A RANCH HORSE

In Mark Rashid’s fourth book, Life Lessons from a Ranch Horse, the teacher becomes the student when a nondescript, seven-year-old horse steps into his life. A famous horse trainer, known for listening to horses and working with them in a non-confrontational manner, Mark is faced with odd behavior from this horse, and he must reevaluate everything he understands about horses and about himself, as a trainer and as a person.

Beginning with an untimely balk from Buck, who never falters, Mark tried to find out why it happened. Drawing on experiences as far reaching as the Navajo way and Japanese martial arts, Mark begins to piece together the workings of the mind of his horse. That process and the conclusions he reaches are the heart of this very personal story.

What he finds challenges him to become a better horse trainer, but it also challenges him to become a better person. His argument that Buck, an everyday horse, has the ability to plan ahead and make choices in a consistent manner will challenge the reader to rethink his or her relationships with animals and way of dealing with life.

In separate chapters, Mark describes the six life lessons he learned while working with Buck. Later in the book, he puts these lessons into practice, with topics such as blending, balance, and communication. Throughout the book, a philosophy of dealing with horses and of living life itself emerges.

Mark’s inimitable storytelling skills illuminate what Buck has to teach. Heart warming but gritty, Life Lessons From a Ranch Horse is not a conventional horse book. But, then again, Buck is not a conventional horse, nor is his owner a conventional horse trainer.

GROUNDWORK - VOLUME I TROUBLESHOOTING  $49.00

In this, the first in a series of groundwork DVDs by Mark, he works in the round pen with two horses that were deemed “hard-to-catch” by their owners. Mark brings a low key, low stress style of round pen work to each horse and quickly helps them understand the idea of being caught. He also shows ways to graduate from the round pen to a large open area when working with a hard to catch horse.

In addition, Mark troubleshoots the reasons for both horses’ lack of willingness to want to allow humans to approach and catch them, while at the same time addressing issues such as working with the “one sided horse” and picking up the feet of a horse who is hard to trim and shoe.

RE-RELEASED!!

FINDING THE TRY - A Key to Communication Between You and Your Horse.

Originally released as a   3-tape video series, this DVD shows Mark working with three different horses developing some horsemanship basics (halts, backing, turns on the forehand, turns on the haunches, sidepasses, impulsion, collection, etc.) while always seeking to show the viewer how to Find the Try.

Mark focuses on what is happening on both sides of the horse/human relationship and how the rider can clearly communicate while building trust.

His instruction on communication involves always searching for the least amount of cue or pressure possible. Key to this is recognizing the horse's earliest tries to respond, because finding and building on these efforts allows the horse to learn faster with less confusion and struggle. Hence . . . Finding the Try. In two specialty sequences, Mark first works with a two-week old foal on some basics on handling, haltering and leading, illustrating how the same principles of Finding the Try apply from the first horse-human interactions. Then Mark demonstrates in close-up the kind of feel in handling reins needed to help a horse (and rider) succeed.

GROUND DRIVING 101

Also included in this DVD is a bonus section on how to braid your own driving lines!

UNDERSTANDING FOOT-FALL and INFLUENCING MOVEMENT

Mark has spent most of his adult life studying equine and human biomechanics, physiology, psychology and movement and has put those studies to practical use in his work with horses and riders.

In this DVD, Mark helps viewers understand their horse's footfall and cadence by showing them how to determine when each individual foot is moving and where it is going. He then goes on to show how to use this movement to the rider's advantage during training and riding. Mark also covers a number of issues that can interfere with the movement of the feet and how to avoid interfering with the horse's movement.

Running time: One hour, thirty minutes (Feb 2005)

SONG OF THE PRAIRIE

Many people in the horse world are familiar with Mark Rashid as an internationally-known clinician, horse trainer and author of four books. However, this project shows another side of Mark. For almost as long as he has been working with horses and cattle (over 40 years), he has also been a professional musician and singer/songwriter. In fact, over the years, Mark has either played with or opened for recording artists such at Michael Martin Murphy, Larry Groce (of the NPR radio program Mountain Stage), The Marshal Tucker Band, the Dixie Dregs, and Pure Prairie League, just to name a few.

In this, his first solo CD, Mark has put together a collection of songs that tell the very special story of a Colorado Ranch between the years 1858 and 1930. Mark wrote all of the songs on the CD (with the exception of two) and plays acoustic guitars, resonator guitar, guitar synthesizer, banjo, piano and keyboards as well as the vocals.

R.L. wrote:

I just got the CD Songs of the Prairie in the post today.  I literally just finished listening to the album as I type this.  I was floored!

High Back Saddle reminded me how much I appreciated the one really nice saddle I have although it doesn't have nearly the stories to tell.

I caught my breath when I first heard "But the cowboy keeps on hitting the dirt, again and again, until one day it lets him in."

I could say something about each song, but that might be overkill.

The whole concert gave me the feeling of listening to a ghost giving me a glimpse of something to appreciate from the past.  It is very powerful imagery inviting me to reminisce about a place I have truly never been except by way of appreciating the pioneering spirit that I might recognize in me, or in people whom I hold dear.

SMALL TOWN

Mark’s band, the Elktones (some of you heard them at the Horse Gathering) have released their first CD titled “Small Town”. Mark has written or co-written three of the 13 songs for the album, and sings lead and back-up vocals, plays acoustic guitar, electric guitar and banjo on the project.

This album is great!,
Reviewer: A music fan from Tempe, AZ

Wow, no kiddin'! This album, "Small Town" by the Elktones from Colorado, is awesome! There's something for everyone and every musical taste on this album. Its so great to hear such fantastic music from a group of relative "unknowns." At this rate, they won't be unknown for long. Their songs are fresh, enjoyable and definitely something new for this millennium. I believe (and hope) that with "Small Town" the Elktones have blazed the way for the future of popular music in the next decade. If you care about the direction popular music should be taking, do yourself a favor and get this album!

It's about time!!,
Reviewer: A New Fan from Bristol, TN

My brother sent me a copy of this CD. I have to admit, it took me a few days before I listened to it. After all, how good could a band be with a name like "The Elktones". Well, I listened to it on my way to work today. Then took it out of the car and listened to it in the office. Then I listened to it on the way home. It is playing as I write this. Finally! A band that has recaptured that wonderful acoustic rock sound of the 70's that the industry has been so sorely missing. Many have tried, but few have succeeded. These guys succeed. The writing is fabulous! "Glad when I'm Gone" will rip your heart out! (We've all been there.) "Small Town" makes you wish you lived in one. "Another Fallen Angel" gives you chills. And the harmonies throughout remind you of the great vocal bands of that gone-by era. CSN, Pure Prairie League, The Ozark Mountain Daredevils, The Dirt Band et.al. have nothing on these guys. Great guitar work, too. Both acoustically and electrically. Top notch all the way. This is a very talented group of musicians for sure. makes you wonder where they've been hiding. Do yourself a favor and pick up this CD. And keep listening for the surprise after the crickets fade out!!
