Mark's Apprentice Kathleen Lindley
Kathleen and Maggie at home in Estes Park, Colorado photo by Joel York
Kathleen grew up in the Midwest where she spent her childhood showing hunters and jumpers on the Midwestern "A" circuit. Upon her graduation from high school, she began training show horses professionally, first in Louisiana, then back in her home state of Wisconsin. Kathleen moved to Colorado in 1994 and purchased a Thoroughbred horse named "Ashcroft". Through her struggles with Ashcroft, Kathleen would meet Mark Rashid in 1997 at a clinic in Parachute, Colorado. Kathleen continued to ride with Mark two or three times a year for the next six years. While riding with Mark, Kathleen continued to show on the Colorado West Hunter Jumper circuit, to trail ride in the Rocky Mountains and to train show and trail horses professionally. In 2003, Mark offered Kathleen the position of "student teacher", whereby she could come to any clinic, anywhere, for free, but in exchange, she would help teach. Kathleen spent a year helping out at clinics as a student teacher and in 2004, became Mark's full-time assistant. As Mark's assistant, Kathleen travels with Mark and helps teach at clinics, helping students continue the work they do in their sessions with Mark. Kathleen brings to the clinics a passion for teaching, a deep knowledge of jumping and the English disciplines, and experience on the trail and working cows as well. Kathleen currently holds an orange belt in Yoshinkan aikido and also practices the martial art of Tai Chi. When she's not on the road with Mark, Kathleen is also an artist (see grayhorsestudio.com), is available for solo clinics, and is writing a book based on her experiences as Mark's assistant ("In the Company of Horses", Johnson Books, publication date fall of 2006). On the odd free weekend, Kathleen shows her horses at Colorado Hunter-Jumper Association shows or trail rides in the mountains around Estes Park, Colorado where she lives with Mark and his family.
A comment made by a week-long participant: Steve wrote: I'd also like to tell you I really liked Kathleen. At the group meetings her comments were definitely coming from a very high level, which is where she is. To me, she is also very confident, professional, and credible working one-on-one. It seems she will be hard to replace.
